At the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers’ 2017 National Addiction Leadership Conference in Austin, TX, La Hacienda’s Sherri Layton presented a workshop on the topic “It’s More Than an Opioid Epidemic – The Big Picture of Addiction”.In Sherri’s workshop, she talked about our industry’s distorted image presented by the media. Sherri advocated for the positive, honest promotion of the addiction industry and the advertising of the legitimate benefits we offer to the lives of the addicted. She discussed ways to counteract the media and promote treatment by, speaking to the community about what we do, attending regulatory hearings, collaborating with local medical professionals in the industry, influencing medical students and counselors by offering internships, and remembering to vote for sufficient funding towards treatment. She believes these actions can spread the word that treatment works and encourage the truth that people recover.
