| It was a big day for us! US Congressman for the 21st District, Lamar Smith, visited La Hacienda. We gave him a brief tour of our facility and held a reception to thank him for the support he has given our industry and for him to share with our staff things he is working on in Washington. We also had leadership from 7 other treatment providers in the “western part” of his district join us. About half of our on duty staff attended.
We have worked with Rep. Smith for many years, going back to his support for the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Act in 2008. More recently he has signed on as a co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) and has joined the Congressional Addiction and Recovery Caucus. He introduced the READ Act, addressing the needs of those with dyslexia, last year and it was signed into law last week. We are fortunate to have someone interested and responsive to our issues representing us in DC. And now Lamar Smith has a “face” to put with the “name” of addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery services.
