When Sandra talks with patients entering the La Hacienda detox program, she speaks from experience. She worked in detox for eight years after serving four years in the former Young Adult Program. A staff member since December 2000, she misses daily contact with patients, but gets to see them before and after treatment. “Checkout is one of the best times. They’re smiling. They don’t even look like the same person.” The Victoria, Texas, native--who has also lived in Dallas and Chicago--has 10 grandkids with whom she likes to play outdoors. Occasionally when talking to incoming patients who are dealing with a lot of emotions, she goes into grandma mode and tells them, “It’s OK. You’re in a good place.”
